The Thing

Basil PoledourisKurt Russell’s other best movie (his made-for-TV special, Elvis (1979) rounds out the trifecta for me, with Tombstone coming in at number four).

The Thing is a remake of the 1951 sci-fi classic, The Thing from Another World.  But this film is about paranoia and trust.  Set in U.S. Outpost 31 in Antarctica, twelve men: one doctor, one cook, one groom, one radio operator, two helicopter pilots, one grunt, one officer, and four scientists discover that a team of Norwegians have unearthed something in the ice.

I have watched this perfect combination of horror and sci-fi on the first real snow of the year for over 12 years now.  On the first snow of the season for the last twelve years, I have told my wife, “you know what we should watch?,” to which she just rolls her eyes because she knows what I’m going to suggest: John Carpenter style horror, suspense, and sci-fi done at its best.
