Mathematics
Once I began algebra in high school, I really fell in love with the logical systems math provided. But the weird thing is I can’t count my way out of a paper bag. My friends always make fun of me because I still use my fingers to add and subtract, and I usually get the answer wrong. But once you substitute letters for numbers…a whole different story. There I excel.
Now, I am an amateur historian of mathematics, and actually use it a lot in my professional work on literature and science. My current research argues that when we read something like a novel, we are actually doing conceptual mathematics. Reading postmodern fiction, for example, is very similar to solving a topology problem. My loves are Calculus, Topology, Group Theory, and Number Theory.
